ഇനിയൊരു നിറകണ്‍ചിരി

Was doing the mosquito-in-nude-beach thing at Bangalore Book Festival this weekend. (I did try rather weakly to stay home but that did not really work. Going there and gawking at books in DC Books' stall is something of an annual ritual that's rather hard to break free from, even though they have a couple of shops in Bangalore now.) Now see what I picked up: an author signed copy! Woo!

C Radhakrishnan probably signs all of his books these days. The personal touch is much appreciated in any case.

The year is 1959. He's 58. He has just survived a non-fatal stroke. Charley dog the French Poodle probably is elder to him in dog-years, and is clearly showing the age. But Steinbeck has got the itch, and nothing is stopping him: "When the virus of restlessness begins to take possession of a wayward man, and the road away from Here seems broad and straight and sweet, the victim must first find in himself a good and sufficient reason for going. This to the practical bum is not difficult. He has a built-in garden of reasons to choose from."

Andy Hertzfeld tells the story of Steve Wozniak University (folklore.org):
As part of the (Macintosh launch) preparations, the Regis McKenna press liaisons (known as the Rejettes) asked each of us to fill out a questionnaire that included the standard questions like date and place of birth, degrees, etc. They were going to be used as the basis for a fact sheet that would be handed out to the press.

Burrell (Smith), who didn't have a college degree, didn't know how to answer the "College Attended" question. He thought about it for a moment and then came up with the perfect answer: "Steve Wozniak University". In some fashion, we were all graduates of Steve Wozniak University.
