Got a random roll of Ektachrome developed, after several rounds of usual indecision, procrastination, deliberation, postponing, and trips to Prabhu's. Here are some random pictures from this and some even older ones, all belonging to the months of July and August 2006. (Pretty old, yeah, but they're here since I do not know what else I can do with them, but that is stating the obvious. No biscuit for me, eh.)

It is an easy trek down to Palamo (or Pal Lhamo, as per more stylish travel literature) from Zanskar Sumdo. Half the way, we were hiking on a river bank, hopping over large roundish rocks left there by the overflowing river during rainfall, and wading through occasional streams that join the river. The remainder stretch was a road under construction. There are weary workers, apparently from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and harsh-looking men supervising them. A shepherd we met on the way said the seven kilometer stretch was under the same state of construction for the past four years - every year the rains interrupt the work and wash away whatever was constructed, after which they start all over again. This road is to connect Zanskar with the rest of the world someday.

At 5050m, Shingo La pass was the highest point of our trek. It rained almost all the time we were on the top, and I had to keep the camera covered. I did not took a pair of gloves along (smart boy did not expect such a cold place in Zanskar). The place is cold and windy, and was under a think fog cover. My hands were frozen all the time, I had a tough time handling the camera. But none of these are really excuses for the general bad quality of the pictures, I know.

Phuktal, one of the most impressive monasteries in Zanskar, is a couple of hours hike away from Purne. Four of us chose to visit Phutkal, others chose to sit under the shade and sip beer and chang, blissfully unaware of what they were to miss.

It had been raining hard in the night. Part of the trail was taken by the river. Tenzin, the boy who came with the horsemen, and Nurbu accompanied us. The route was a little hard, sometimes we made our way hanging over steep cliffs, sometimes over wet slippery rocks. After crossing a bridge and climbing up the slippery rocks and turning a corner around a hill, each of us suddenly stopped at various states of "whoa!", amazed by the fairy tale sight that just materialized before us.
